How to connect android to remote desktop. Remote control of PC from Android

There are many situations when you may need to control your PC from Android. For example, this will be useful to you if your mouse or keyboard suddenly breaks, or you are simply too lazy to get up from the couch, and as luck would have it, the next episode of your favorite TV series has ended. In general, these, as well as many other problems, can be solved if you have a smartphone at hand.

From this article you will learn about which programs will help you in this or that case. It will also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each application and provide other useful information about them.

RemoteDroid

This is a real veteran among programs that allow you to remotely control your PC via Android. The application will not require any complex manipulations from you to establish a connection. All you need is to install the client on your mobile device, and the server part on your computer.

In RemoteDroid, PC control from Android is carried out by analogy with a laptop touchpad. In this case, the smartphone screen is divided into three parts, one of which is responsible for moving the cursor across the screen, and the other two are responsible for the left and right mouse buttons, respectively. In addition, you can call up the virtual keyboard and type text using it. Among the shortcomings, perhaps, we can only highlight the inconvenient adjustment of the sensor sensitivity. For the changes you have made to take effect, you will need to reconnect your smartphone to the computer each time.

WiFi Mouse

Many users believe that this program for managing PCs from Android is the best of its kind. The connection here is made using Wi-Fi, and setting it up is quite simple. If you wish, you can generally make your smartphone connect to your computer automatically.

The Wi-Fi Mouse interface emulates a standard laptop touchpad and does not have any special features. But the program will delight you with its additional functions. For example, you can use it as a keyboard that supports a full set of standard commands and hotkeys. In addition, the application has hotkeys for controlling the multimedia player and other useful features.

The disadvantage of Wi-Fi Mouse is that after a certain time an annoying sign will appear asking you to purchase a paid version of the program. Not critical, but still annoying sometimes.

Monect Portable

This program will allow you not only to control your PC from Android, but will also replace a gamepad and trackball (working with a multimedia player). In general, an ideal choice for gamers and music lovers. The application is very easy to set up and then understand its main functions.

If we talk about standard features, then Monext Portable is practically no different from a regular touchpad. But as soon as you begin to understand the program in depth, you will immediately discover such useful features as support for shortcut keys, simple macros, and the ability to change the layout of the virtual keyboard if necessary. The downside of the application is advertising, which is an eyesore every now and then. The problem is solved by purchasing a paid version, which not every user can afford.

Microsoft Remote Desktop

A proprietary program from Microsoft that allows you to manage your PC from an Android phone. The advantage of the utility is that you do not need to install the server part on your computer, and all connection settings boil down to enabling remote access mode.

The program completely emulates your PC, which gives you access not only to primitive functions such as typing or launching files, but also allows you to perform complex operations with folders. In addition, you can control your PC via Android without having to look at the monitor, and not every application can afford this. Unfortunately, Windows Remote Desktop only works with computers running Windows 7 or higher. In some cases, this limitation will be critical, since many users still use XP or even prefer a non-Microsoft OS.

TeamViewer

This is a very popular program. PC control via Android is established here via Wi-Fi, and setting up the connection with the proper skill will take you no more than a minute. The application completely emulates a computer desktop on the screen of your smartphone and allows you to access any files stored on your hard drive.

It is impossible not to mention such program functions as built-in chat and video calling. In addition, through TeamViewer you can easily transfer files from your computer to your smartphone and back. Simply put, the application not only allows you to remotely control your PC from Android, but also has a wide range of additional tools. The disadvantage of TeamViewer is that it is difficult for an untrained user to master all the functions. However, you may never need most of them.

Splashtop 2

This is another useful program, the main purpose of which is to control a PC via an Android phone. The advantages of this application include simplicity and high speed. Splashtop 2 displays your computer desktop on your phone screen in real time. This allows you to work with files, watch videos or listen to music, and in some cases even play simple games. Another unique feature of the program is the transfer of high quality video from a computer to a phone online. True, not every device can handle this, but it’s still a very useful function.

It is also worth mentioning that there is a premium version of the program with advanced functionality. For example, you can control your computer not only via Wi-Fi, but also via 3G or 4G. The downside of Splashtop 2 is the limitation on the number of computers you can connect to. The problem exists only in the free version of the application and is solved by purchasing a premium subscription.

PocketCloud

This is another free program that allows you to remotely control your PC from Android. The app allows you to choose your connection type and then projects your computer desktop onto your smartphone screen. By the way, the easiest way to establish a connection is using your Google account.

One of the features of the program is the presence of a special navigation wheel. It provides all sorts of functions that allow you to access media files in one click, zoom in or out on a specific area on the screen, minimize a window, and much more. In addition, the application supports a number of settings that allow you to improve or, conversely, degrade the image quality on the virtual desktop.

PocketCloud has several disadvantages. First of all, the program only works with Mac and Windows operating systems, so it won't be suitable for users who prefer Linux. In addition, the free version of the application allows you to connect to only one computer.

Jump Desktop

This is an interesting application, not inferior in its functionality to the above-mentioned TeamViewer. Here, the PC is controlled from an Android phone via Wi-Fi, so you can access the desktop from any place where there is Internet. The program supports various gestures for quick access to certain folders, can work with multiple monitors, and also allows you to freely watch videos in high definition. Another interesting feature of the application is that it supports mouse and keyboard connected to your Android device.

The disadvantage of Jump Desktop is that the program is paid, and there is simply no trial version. It is possible that this is why the utility is not widely used.

Unified Remote

The program allows you to control your PC from Android, but it is still more suitable for using your smartphone as a remote control. The application provides several modes that allow you to work with video files (start, pause, rewind), images (zoom), audio files (rewind, play), and also adjust the volume.

To get started with Unified Remote, you will need to first install the server part on your computer. Otherwise, the process of setting up the program is simple and will not take much of your time. Please note that there are two versions of Unified Remote. The paid version, unlike the free version, supports voice control. The disadvantages of the program include only a poor set of functions compared to its closest analogues.

ThinVNC

This is an interesting program with an unusual way of implementing remote control. The special feature of the application is that you will not need to install it on your smartphone. You just need to launch the server part on your computer and enter a special address in your phone browser. After this, you will have full access to your PC's desktop.

The advantage of the program is that its performance does not depend on the version of the Android OS installed on your smartphone. All actions are performed in the browser window, and the speed of operation depends entirely on the quality of the Internet connection. The disadvantage of ThinVNC, oddly enough, is that it controls the computer through a browser. It’s not very convenient to do this on devices with small displays, and there are no special features that make it easier to interact with files and folders.

By the way, the functionality of these applications is quite enough to perform everyday tasks. Each of the presented applications has its own characteristics and attracts the user: Microsoft Remote Desktop And Chrome Remote Desktop do not require installation of additional software, Splashtop Remote allows you to transmit sound to a mobile device, PocketCloud allows connections to be made in several ways, and Teamviewer It looks pretty nice and pleases with its functionality. Choose a program to your liking and enjoy it for your health.

Remote administration programs have always been popular. After all, it is very convenient to see what is being done on the computer while being in a completely different place. You can remotely help your friends solve some technical problems, check what your child is doing when he is alone at home, see how the download is progressing in a torrent client or encoding a large video.

Since smartphones and tablets appeared in home local networks, along with computers and laptops, it has become obvious that the latter are incredibly convenient to use for remote control. If the data transfer speed is high enough, then why not play a game installed on your computer while lying on the couch with your tablet? Or, say, not watching an interesting film? In addition, current mobile devices can cope well with the usual tasks that are assigned to remote access programs.

On Google Play you can find more than a dozen applications that can be used to organize remote control of computers running Windows, Mac and Linux. Among them there are developments from well-known manufacturers of administration software, and programs created specifically for mobile devices. There are not many free solutions among them. In this review, we tested four applications that allow you to work remotely on your computer from an Android smartphone or tablet.

⇡Microsoft Remote Desktop

  • Developer - Microsoft Corporation
  • Size - 4.4 MB
  • Price - free

Microsoft's proprietary utility for remotely controlling a computer with Android was released quite recently - at the end of October. Using the application, you can control a computer that runs on Windows 7 or Windows 8. Since we are dealing with a “native” solution from the developer of a desktop operating system, there is no need to install any client on it.

But in order to be able to connect, you still need to make some changes to the system settings: go to "Control Panels" to the “System” section and select “Remote access settings”. After this, you need to allow remote connections to the computer (by the way, if the built-in firewall is disabled, Windows will not allow you to enable remote access, so first you will have to start the corresponding service).

For authorization, the Microsoft Remote Desktop Android application uses the system username and password. If you are going to log in as an administrator, you do not need to perform any additional actions on your computer. To allow access to other users, you need to click on the “Select users” button and add them to the list of remote desktop users. It is also worth keeping in mind that if you do not use a password to log in, you must add it in the “User Accounts” section, since the remote connection will not work without a password. ( Please note that remote connection using Microsoft Remote Desktop is only possible to computers that support Remote Desktop Protocol - RDP. A list of systems that are compatible with this protocol is available at the link. — approx. edit . )

After completing this simple setup, you can download the Microsoft Remote Desktop application from Google Play and add a new connection.

Its settings indicate the IP address of the computer on the local network or its name. You can also, if desired, specify a username and password to log in (for security reasons, you can not specify them right away, but enter them right before connecting).

If the connection is successful, local work with the computer will be blocked and a login window will appear on it. If you log in locally, the remote connection will be lost. Thus, when connecting remotely, you can see the desktop only on the screen of your mobile device.

Once connected, the remote desktop is displayed on the device screen. There are two controls available at the top of the screen: buttons for displaying the Android virtual keyboard and for navigating the screen.

If you need to use keys that are not on the Android keyboard, you can open the additional settings panel by touching the panel with the connection name. From it you can go to the virtual keyboard with the keys F1-F12, Esc, Home, Tab, End, Win, Ins, Enter and others - standard for a regular desktop pointing device. When connecting remotely to a Windows 8 device, pressing the virtual Win key switches between the desktop and the Start screen.

From the advanced settings panel, you can also disable multi-touch gestures and switch to navigation mode using a regular cursor.

To end the remote connection session, simply double-tap the Back button on your Android device.

⇡ “Teamviewer - remote access”

  • Developer - Teamviewer
  • Size - 11 MB
  • Price: Free for non-commercial use

Thanks to its free status (for non-commercial use) and simplicity, Teamviewer has long been one of the most popular remote administration solutions. With the advent of the era of mobile devices, applications were created to control computers running Android, iOS and Windows Phone.

To control your computer from a mobile device, you will need to install a PC client and an Android application. TeamViewer can connect to Windows, Mac and Linux computers.

If you do not plan to connect to other devices from your computer, it is most convenient to use TeamViewer QuickSupport. This module does not require installation or administrator rights. After launching it, a unique computer identifier (9 digits) is generated, as well as a four-digit password. The password can be updated if necessary.

Once this module is running, you can open the mobile application. Mobile Teamviewer can operate in two modes: remote control and file transfer. In both cases, you will need to enter an ID and password on the screen of your smartphone or tablet to connect to the computer.

If a remote connection was requested, then after a successful connection, the computer desktop will appear on the device screen. It will also be visible on the computer monitor screen, but the resolution will be changed in accordance with the screen settings of the mobile device.

To ensure convenient work with the remote desktop, the creators of TeamViewer have developed a whole system of controls. Tips for using your fingers to navigate are shown before you connect, and can also be shown at any time during a remote work session. Thus, using your fingers you can scroll, imitate clicks of the right and left mouse buttons, move the cursor and individual objects.

The TeamViewer control panel is located at the bottom of the screen. With its help, you can quickly end a session, send a remote computer to reboot, or block it. In addition, for the duration of a remote connection session, you can prohibit local work with the computer. If you have problems displaying the remote desktop, you can try reducing the resolution, data transfer quality, and also hiding the display of wallpaper in the mobile client settings. These options can be selected for an individual connection or globally.

The Control Panel also gives you the ability to quickly display a virtual keyboard. In addition to the Android keyboard, you can also work with additional keys: turn on Ctrl, Alt, Shift, use the F1-F12 keys and others.

In file transfer mode, you can see the file system of the remote computer and copy files from your PC to your mobile device or vice versa.

The TeamViewer mobile client remembers the IDs of the computers to which the connection was made, but if there are many remote PCs, it is more convenient to use the “Computers and Contacts” section to manage them. To do this, you will need to create a Teamviewer account (you can do this from either a mobile device or a computer). Then you can create groups in it and add identifiers (and, if desired, passwords) of computers to which you need to connect.

  • Developer: Splashtop
  • Size - 18 MB
  • Price - free (expanded functionality - $1.99 per month)

Splashtop Remote is another free app that lets you from an Android device You can control a computer running Windows, Mac and Linux. It uses a slightly different distribution model than Teamviewer. The program is free for non-commercial use, but to use some additional features it is suggested to purchase an extension. Paid options include: access to a remote computer via the Internet (for free, you can control it only over a local network) and tools for conveniently creating annotations on the screen. The free version also has a limit on the number of computers you can connect to - up to five.

A Splashtop account is required to use the app. You can create it either in the mobile application or in the Splashtop Streamer client for the desktop system. To connect, as you might guess, you need to log in on both devices using your account. After this, the mobile client will detect computers that are available for connection, and you can open a remote control session.

In the mobile client settings, you can even enable automatic connection at startup. In this case, the list of available computers will not be displayed and the application will connect to the device for which the last remote connection session was performed.

By default, you do not need to enter any additional passwords, but if you are concerned about unauthorized access, you can enable the desktop client settings to require a password for the current Windows account. In addition, it is proposed to use a security code, that is, simply put, a password that will need to be entered each time to connect.

Some security settings, which in other solutions are available in mobile applications, are offered in Splashtop to be configured in the desktop client. For example, you can disable the display of your desktop on the local computer screen during a remote communication session. You can also block the use of the keyboard and mouse, and initiate logging out of your account upon completion of remote work.

One of the features of Splashtop is the transfer of HD video with sound to a mobile device. Thanks to this, you can, for example, watch a movie on your tablet that is running on your computer, or play a computer game remotely. At the user's request, during a remote communication session, Splashtop can transmit sound only to a mobile device (it will not be heard locally), not transmit sound (it will be heard locally), or broadcast it both there and there.

When connecting remotely, the screen resolution on the computer does not change, and - unless otherwise specified in the client settings - you can continue to work on the local PC. To control the desktop of an Android computer, there are a number of gestures (tips on how to use them are offered for beginners), as well as a touchpad.

You can control cursor settings by changing sensitivity and movement speed. On a mobile device, you can view your computer desktop in its original resolution or scale it to fit a small screen.

  • Developer: Wyse Technology Inc.
  • Size - 11 MB
  • Price: Free (with some restrictions)

Another free solution that allows you to remotely access your computer desktop is PocketCloud. However, it is not suitable for Linux users - the desktop version only supports computers with Mac or Windows. The mobile client is free for use with only one computer. To remove this limitation, as well as to get some additional features, you need to purchase PocketCloud Remote Desktop Pro.

One of the strengths of the application is the ability to choose the type of connection. By default, the simplest method is used, which does not require any technical knowledge from the user - through Google App Engine. In this case, you'll need to enter your Google account information in both the desktop client and the mobile app. After this, the computer will appear in the list of available devices on the mobile screen - and you can start a connection session to it.

For advanced users, PocketCloud offers two more remote connection options - through the RDP protocol, which is used in Windows, and also through the popular VNC system. In both cases, you will need to enter the IP address of the computer you want to connect to.

After connecting, a special navigation element appears on the mobile device screen near the cursor - a wheel with various functions. It is convenient to use when you need to right-click, zoom in on a specific area of the screen, scroll, or display a virtual keyboard.

The mobile client settings provide a number of settings to improve the quality of image transmission. So, you can disable menu animation, themes, wallpapers, and high-quality fonts.

⇡ Conclusion

Almost all developers of applications for remote computer control provide their programs free of charge for non-commercial use. And we must admit that for ordinary tasks the proposed functions are quite sufficient. Each of the applications is attractive in some way: to work with Microsoft Remote Desktop you do not need to install additional software on your computer, Splashtop Remote provides audio transmission to a mobile device, PocketCloud is interesting because it offers several connection options. Finally, Teamviewer looks the most attractive, since it has a separate mode for transferring files, can work both on a local network and via the Internet, and does not impose restrictions on the number of computers to which you can connect.

Despite the active development of mobile devices, tablets and smartphones are still not able to replace computers in solving many problems. However, modern technologies allow mobile devices to become a tool for interacting with a computer.

Remote access is a feature that can be used in many ways. Many computer users know that you can connect remotely to another PC, for example, through the TeamViewer program. A similar remote control option is also available on mobile devices. In this article, we will look at two solutions for remote computer control from smartphones and tablets, each of which has its own pros and cons.

Why do you need remote access to your computer?

Remote access to a PC via a mobile device greatly simplifies the life of the user who uses the computer as the main tool for work. There are several scenarios for using remote access to a computer from a smartphone or tablet:

  • The need to access files or programs on the computer;
  • The desire to control the process of completing a task. For example, downloading something from the Internet;
  • Need for mobility;
  • The ability to control the execution of tasks on the computer by another person.

You can give “everyday” examples of the convenience of using remote computer control within the same Wi-Fi network. For example, if a movie or TV series is downloaded to your computer, you can connect to it and watch it through your mobile device or use it as a remote control. If viewing was started on a PC, remote access allows you to connect from a mobile device and continue viewing on it.

How to set up remote computer control from a smartphone

There are many programs that allow you to remotely connect to a computer from a mobile device. In this article, we will look at how to do this using two programs - Splashtop and TeamViewer. Each of them has its own advantages.

Setting up Splashtop

The Splashtop program has many advantages over its competitors:

For the Splashtop application to work, you need to download the “output” client to the computer from which the broadcast will be broadcast, and the “receive” client to the mobile device. After this, you will need to register in the application and you can start broadcasting.

Let's take a closer look at setting up remote control via Splashtop:

It is worth noting that the Splashtop application is convenient to use when you need to interact with a computer on the same Wi-Fi network. At the same time, the functionality of remote connection from a mobile device to a PC via Splashtop outside a Wi-fi network is paid, and in such situations you can use the TeamViewer program for free.

Setting up TeamViewer

The TeamViewer application is well known to computer users. It allows you to connect remotely from one PC to another. For some time now, mobile versions of the application have been available in the App Store and Google Play. With their help, you can connect to a computer on the same Wi-Fi network or remotely via the Internet. At the moment, in terms of interface convenience and quality of information transfer, mobile versions of the TeamViewer program are inferior to the Splashtop application. But if you need to connect to a computer outside the Wi-Fi network for free, it can be used for this purpose. In addition, through TeamViewer, unlike Splashtop, you can connect to third-party computers remotely from a mobile device, as well as transfer files.

Setting up remote computer control via the mobile version of TeamViewer is as follows:

Note: If you want to connect to a third-party computer via TeamViewer, you just need to enter its ID and password, which the computer user can see in the application after downloading and installing it.

Android Remote Desktop

  • Lumber room *

Somehow I wanted to work on a computer, or even a server, from my phone. To connect a computer to a computer, I usually use a standard Windows RDP client; it opens a new desktop for each connection, which is quite convenient.
3 clients were downloaded and reviewed - Team View, Remote Desktop, 2X Client.

The first thing I got my hands on was Team Viewer mobile for Android.
This is a VNC client that requires a VNC server from the same company running on your computer. Access is provided through a 9-digit login and a 4-digit password. Control is carried out by the current desktop. Convenient if you need to help a friend set up a computer. It’s not convenient if you don’t want to disturb this very friend. And I don’t want to install or run the portable version every time with unnecessary software - a VNC server. In addition, the program obsessively thanks you for using the free video for non-commercial purposes. Cute but annoying that it doesn't turn off.

The second was the Remote Desktop application.
Very easy to use, with a minimum of options. You just need to enter the IP address or DNS name of the Windows computer you want to connect to, login and password. You can save them so that you can enter them again with one click. Then a fragment of the desktop with a mouse cursor will be displayed on the mobile screen. Short taps anywhere on the screen mean pressing the left mouse button at the point of its position, long taps mean pressing the right button. The mouse moves on the screen area around it by stroking it across the screen in the desired direction. To enter text, you can call up the Android keyboard that is currently installed and active on you.
Overall, it’s a convenient, interesting program, the only thing I didn’t like was the inability to change the screen resolution, which is 1280*1024. My phone has a resolution of 480*320 and constantly running around the screen looking for dialog windows is not convenient.

The third download was 2X Client.
It did not have the disadvantage of the previous application - the resolution of the remote desktop could be changed from 640*480 to 2048*1152. Other parameters were also configured, almost like in the Windows RDP client. The inconvenient thing is that the mouse cursor is not visible. Click with the left button in the place where your finger pressed. True, it is possible to summon a mouse ghost with three buttons and a visible cursor, but I didn’t really like it either. The keyboard can be called either installed in Android or standard for the application. The second, in my case, displayed English letters and printed Russian ones.

I think I'll be using Remote Decktop in the future. Especially if you manage to get into its sources to change the resolution.
